The word ‘Rudraksha’ has originated from two Sanskrit words of ‘Rudra’ and ‘Aksha’ which means ‘tears of lord shiva’. Rudraksha is said to be Rudra's gift to the mankind and who wears Rudraksha with devotion is like Rudra himself.
Rudraksha is popularly known as Utrasum Bread tree. Botanical name for Utrasum Bead is Elaeocarpus Ganitrus Roxb, commonly called Rudraksha Tree in India, also called Ganitri Tree or Jenitri Tree in Indonesia. The fruit of the Utrasum bead tree is called Rudraksha fruit. The seeds of the Rudraksha fruit are called beads. There are clefts called MUKHIS on the surface of the beads. The classification of the Mukhis is done on the basis of the number of mukhis on the surface of a Rudraksha bead.
There are 1 Mukhi to 38 Mukhis in Rudraksha but normally 1 to 14 mukhis are used for astrological purposes and the rest are rare and special beads.
